There are a minimum of 7 Major plates (African, Antarctic, Eurasian, North American, South American, Pacific, and Indo-Australian). Indo-Australian is considered most of the times 2 plates.
There are a lot of minor plates, the biggest minor plates are: Arabian, Caribbean, Juan de Fuca (N-American Pacific), Cocos (N-American Pacific), Nazca (S-American Pacific), Philippine Sea and Scotia.
There also a lot of micro-plates, or crustal blocks.
In the past, as you guess, many more!!!
