Me and my work
I’m trying to understand the earthquake history of an oasis in the Gobi Desert.
Spread all over the world, there are areas where earthquakes occur every now and then. But sometimes also the areas where no earthquakes occur have experienced earthquakes in the past. Using satellite images, digital terrain models and geophysical devices that allow snapshots of the subsurface, I can map and study faults that have produced these earthquakes.
My Typical Day
During typical office days I process and analyse data and write scientific papers about it.
But sitting there in front of my computer doesn’t mean I do the same stuff over and over again! On the one day I process the geophysical data (that means I use special software to visualize the subsurface), on the other day I create a map or a figure and sometimes I prepare presentations to show my work to other scientists.
What I'd do with the money
With the money I would prepare a day out for many, many interested students to understand what earthquakes and natural hazards mean to all of us in real life.
We would learn a lot about natural hazards, see some real faults, model their movements and see which impact fault movements has on the society and the nature.
