Question: At autumn and winter plants defoliate.Does it reduce amount of oxygen level?

  1. Hi!
    That’s a good point!
The process producing oxygen (photosynthesis) in trees happens in the leaves, where there is the highest availability of chlorophyll. So yes, during autumn and winter deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves) will produce substantially less oxygen.
Luckily, this doesn’t significantly affect global oxygen levels. In fact, there is a huge reservoir of oxygen both in the atmosphere and in the ocean which will still be available.
Also remember that when in one hemisphere it is autumn or winter, in the other hemisphere it will be spring or summer, so these processes tend to balance each other out between different seasons.
