excellent question!
generally, there are teams of scientist working on each active volcano and they monitor what is happening there. The scientists will measure to see if there are any earthquakes happening and how strong they are, they will check to see if there is any gas coming out of the volcano and they will use equipment to see if the volcano is expanding. These things all show that a volcano is getting ready to erupt. The earth quakes show that there is magma moving under the ground, the expansion of the mountain shows the magma collecting inside and the gases show that the magma is getting close to the surface.
Sometimes we are surprised by a volcano erupting when we weren’t expecting it, but usually if you follow the suggestions above then you *should* know if and when your volcano will erupt!
