Hi there!
How a seismograph works can be described for example as a weight with a pen that hangs on a spring, standing in a box on the ground. When the earth moves, for example up or down, the box also moves up or down. But the weight in the box remains stable at the beginning of this movement (that’s because of mass inertia) and bounces back later and then swings for some time.
The pen writes down these movements of the swinging weight and produces a seismogram, these shaky lines you can also see on top of the page below the “I’m a Geoscientist” logo.
