I’m not an expert, so maybe Bas (who is a geologist) can give you a better answer. But I can try…
As far as I know, rocks which contain a lot of silica have a more acidic character. Igneous rocks (those that form when magma or lava cool and solidify) generally have lighter colours when they have a high silica content (and a more acidic character).
I’m not sure if there is a specific test for this that you could do in the lab, but my guess is that silica content and colour are used to define it.
