Generally you need a background which includes at least 2 core sciences from school – I would also recommend having maths but its not essential.
After school, you need to go to university to do a bachelors degree in geology/earth sciences. After that if you’d really like to go into industry you need a masters degree specialising in whatever industry you’d like to go into e.g. oil/petroleum geoscience, mining geology, environmental management etc.
A PhD is only really required if you want to go into academics, so if you want to become a lecturer or a researcher. But some people who want to go into industry also do PhDs too.
