Good question… I also have only basic knowledge on paleomagnetism. 😉
But what I know is that they study the magnetic properties of rocks and sediments. Their results give signals and patterns that can help to find out at which latitude or longitude the tectonics plate has been during the formation of these rocks. And this helps to understand the paleogeography of the continents – and how the world has looked like in the past.
